Mr Hayhurst is Deputy Secretary, Indo-Pacific Group, DFAT.
Prior to this position, Mr Hayhurst was First Assistant Secretary, International Division, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
He was lead drafter of Australia’s 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper and First Assistant Secretary in the Foreign Policy White Paper Taskforce 2016-2017. Mr Hayhurst served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy, Beijing, from 2012-2016. He has worked in a range of positions within DFAT, including Assistant Secretary, Africa Branch.
From 2007-2009 he served as Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs on North Asia, South Asia, Afghanistan, Iraq and counter-terrorism and Senior Analyst at the Office of National Assessments from 2004-07.
He has a First Class Honours Degree in History from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma of Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University. Mr Hayhurst joined DFAT in 1999.
