Dan Fankhauser

First Assistant Secretary, Department of Defence

As First Assistant Secretary Infrastructure within Security and Estate Group, Dan Fankhauser is responsible for the development, maintenance and disposal of the Defence estate: one of the largest real estate portfolios in Australia.

Mr Fankhauser has held a range of senior and representational roles within Defence, including as Assistant Secretary of the National Naval Shipbuilding Office and Secretariat of the Government’s independent expert Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board. He represented Australia’s acquisition and sustainment interests with the United States and Canada while permanently based at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC from 2011-16.

Mr Fankhauser has extensive experience providing strategic advice to Government, including as Senior Capability & Industry Advisor to the Minister for Defence during the development and release of the 2009 Defence White Paper and as Chief of Staff to the Minister for Defence Materiel in 2010-11.

Mr Fankhauser served for more than a decade as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy, qualifying first as a Bridge Watchkeeping Officer and later as a Mine Warfare specialist in 2003.
