Craig Chittick OAM

First Assistant Secretary, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

Mr Chittick joined the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet as First Assistant Secretary, International Division in October 2022.

Before this, Mr Chittick had a 27-year career at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), where he worked across all of the department’s groups, with a strong focus on the Indo-Pacific.

During his time at DFAT in Canberra, Mr Chittick served as Deputy Head of the Office of the Pacific (2022); First Assistant Secretary, US & Indo-Pacific Strategy Division (2020-2022); First Assistant Secretary, South East Asia Mainland and Regional Division (2015-2016); Ambassador for People Smuggling Issues (2012-2014), Lead Negotiator (Services and Investment), Malaysia-Australia Free Trade Agreement (2011-2012); Assistant Secretary, United States Branch (2007-2008); Director, Staffing Operations Section (2005-2007) and Director, Indonesia Section (2003-2005).

He served overseas as Ambassador to Vietnam (2016-2019), Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia (2008-2011); and Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta (2000-2003).

He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2003 for his role in Bali in the aftermath of the 2002 bombings and the Order of Friendship by the President of Vietnam in 2019 for his contribution to the bilateral relationship.
